George Fernandes, (born on 3 June 1930) is a fire brand socialist, trade unionist (Railway strike of 1974), (hero of anti-emergency struggle of 1975-77, member of Indian Parliament's lower house - Lok Sabha - from 1967 to 2009. Was briefly in Rajya Sabha post 2009. He was one of the founding leader of Samyukta Socialist Party,till 1977, Janata Party in 1977 and Janata Dal in 1990 and later Samata Party. He served as Industries Minister in Janata Party headed government in 1977-79, Railway Minister in Janata Dal government 1989-90, and Defence Minister in NDA government (1998-2004). He is married to Leila Kabir Fernandes and has a son, Sean Fernandes. Created lasting institutions like Taxi Men’s cooperative and New India Bank in Mumbai and initiated Konkan Railway Corporation, as Railway Minister, He was the first Defence Minister to visit Siachen glacier in Kashmir, the highest war front of the world.
