An Appeal to Friends and Associates of George Fernandes

The recent publication of a book purported to be a biography has upset most friends and associates of the socialist leader George Fernandes. There is a strong feeling that George, the rare activist politician of international standing deserves a better documentation of his work and life.

Such a documentation calls for not just positive contributions of George Fernandes with the active participation and testimonials of his associates and friends, but also evaluation of professionals from the field of academics and activism. Given the new media issues, a Visual Archive on George Fernandes on internet with a video film in a professional format can serve as the best format for this documentation which will last for generations in the digital age. This can enable George Fernandes his rightful place in Indian political history, as his trade union and emergency activities are well known across the world, apart from his contributions as a Minister in Central government.

Since George was a public figure, it is in the fitness of things that such an effort is funded by his associates, institutions he initiated and friends through a crowd funding and not by any State or Central governments. We are sure such a funding will be a fitting tribute to man who selflessly served his people, with all the limitations of the Indian real political scenario.

We expected that such a video project involving his life and work across the country can cost upto Rs 30 lakhs and need a dedicated team to work on it for four to five months. And we plan to showcase the work in his 93 rd birth anniversary falling on 3 June 2023 across India, if all of his friends and associates contribute towards it.

We have the initial go ahead of the few Tamil supporters/ his family/ of George sab and his Unions at Mumbai and we are sure many more will come to support this project. We can assure you that all funds will be accounted for, to the those contributors and any excess funds after the production and initial screenings will be utilised to expand the George Fernandes Foundation which is in its nascent stage.
